PREZODE warmly welcomes the fourteen elected members of its second Steering Committee! The three Colleges represent broad geographical diversity, and a high proportion of women (nine out of fourteen). We count six renewed members. The newly established International Organizations college will join the SC.
Following the call for nominations and electoral process that concluded on 7 November, the elected experts will serve on the Steering Committee, representing the scientific, regional, and civil society colleges.
The Scientific College
Dr. Sukanta Chowdhury
Dr. Sukanta Chowdhury is a Scientist and Team Lead for One Health Research Unit (OHRU), Infectious Diseases Division, icddr,b (www.icddrb.org), Bangladesh. A veterinary epidemiologist, he has research experiences in emerging infections and One Health for 15 years.
Pr. Dien Nguyen Thi
Nguyen Thi Dien holds a Ph.D in sociology and rural economics from Liège University. Belgium. An expert in the Sociology of health, she works at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vietnam National University of Agriculture. She is also the co-coordinator of the GREASE network. (Vietnam).
Dr. Christina Pettan-Brewer.
Dr. Christina Pettan-Brewer is a veterinary scientist, associate professor, educator, and global One Health leader at the University of Washington School of Medicine whose career spans academic research, international diplomacy, and community engagement. She holds advanced degrees in veterinary medicine and infectious diseases. She was born in Brazil.
Pr. Duangporn Pichpol
Dr. Duangporn Pichpol, DVM, Dr.med.vet., DTBVPH, is an Assistant Professor at Chiang Mai University and Director of the Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety Centre in Thailand. Her expertise relies on two decades of academic, research, and leadership experience in veterinary public health, food safety, and One Health.
Dr. Jamie K. Reaser
Jamie K. Reaser, PhD, is the President/CEO of Rain Crow Consulting and Affiliate Faculty with the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. She also serves on the Steering Committee of the International Alliance Against Health Risks in the Wildlife Trade and the Convention on Migratory Species Biodiversity and Health Working Group. Jamie holds a doctorate from Stanford University and numerous certifications relative to the social sciences. Focusing on the human dimensions of conservation and regenerative socio-ecological resilience, she has worked in over 70 countries (USA).
The Regions’ College
Pr. Prisca Mugabe (Zimbabwe)
Associate Professor at the University of Zimbabwe, Prisca Mugabe is the Africa Region College representative of the PREZODE initiative. With a PhD in Rangeland Ecology and Management, a Master’s degree in Grassland Science, and a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture-Animal Science, Prisca brings expertise in rangelands, anchored crop-livestock systems and their interphase with wildlife systems. She is entering a second term on the Steering Committee.
Dr. Gerardo Suzán (Mexico)
Dr. Gerardo Suzán is a Full-Time Professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, with specilzations in Ecology and Biology, he holds an extensive expertise in Disease Ecology, Conservation Medicine, and One Health, he has conducted research and collaborated with institutions across Europe, North America, Latin America, and the Caribbean for over two decades. He is entering a second term on the Steering Committee.
Pr. Nitish Debnath (Bangladesh)
Pr. Nitish Debanth is the SC MEMBER of the PREZODE from South Asia. He holds a PhD in Virology from the University of Surrey and an MSc in Tropical Vet Medicine from the University of Edinburgh. He had a long involvement with Veterinary Education and Research. He was a professor and the founding Vice Chancellor of Chittagong Veterinary University. He has been actively involved in promoting One Health nationally and internationally, and working as the National Coordinator of One Health Bangladesh.
Dr. Tongkorn Meeyam (Thailand)
Dr. Tongkorn Meeyam is a Thai expert in One Health and Veterinary Public Health, serving as the Executive Director of the Southeast Asia One Health University Network (SEAOHUN) Secretariat. She holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Chulalongkorn University and completed her Dr. med. vet. at Freie Universität Berlin. She has nearly 20 years of experience at Chiang Mai University and as Director of the Veterinary Public Health and Food Safety Centre for Asia Pacific, a WOAH Collaborating Centre.
Dr. Marta Martínez Aviles (Spain)
Veterinary epidemiology researcher, Dr Marta Martínez Avilés is a researcher of the Ministry of Science in Spain (Científico Titular) in the Epidemiology and Environmental Health Group, Department of Emerging Diseases and Global Health, National Research Centre on Animal Health (CISA-INIA, CSIC). She is also advisor to the WOAH Southeast Regional Representation.
Pr. Ricardo Soares Magalhaes (Australia)
Ricardo Soares Magalhães (LMV MSc PhD DiplECVPH) is an animal health biosecurity expert, veterinarian and an infectious disease epidemiologist with qualifications in both human and veterinary public health. A Professor in Zoonotic Disease Epidemiology & Biosecurity, School of Veterinary Science, University of Queensland, he is also the Director of Queensland Alliance for One Health Sciences, as well as being involved in many high-level international programs. He is entering a second term on the Steering Committee.
The Civil Society College
Dr. Lucy Keatts – Wildlife Conservation Society
Dr. Lucy Keatts is a veterinarian and Associate Director of the Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) Health Program. She has extensive experience implementing and bridging capacity for research and surveillance for zoonotic and emerging diseases at wildlife-human-domestic animal interfaces around the globe, and in supporting the development of locally relevant wildlife disease surveillance networks from local to national levels. She is entering a second term on the Steering Committee.
Manon Lelarge – Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières
Manon Lelarge is Program Officer at Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières – a France-based international NGO and sits at the PREZODE Steering Committee as a representative of the Civil Society College. She holds two master’s degrees, one in Agronomy Engineering and one in International Rural Development, which she put to practice for the last 8 years working with various international organizations. She has proven experience in concrete implementation of the OH approach in the field, notably in a pastoralist context, together with smallholder communities, local and international partners.
Dr. Magda Robalo – Institute for Global Health and Development
Dr Magda Robalo is the President and co-founder of the Institute for Global Health and Development (IGHD), established in December 2021. IGHD is a private, not-for-profit Foundation, focused on promoting equitable access to quality health care. She has been the Minister of Public Health and led the national response to the COVID-19
pandemic, as High Commissioner for COVID-19 in Guinea-Bissau. Dr Robalo is a medical physician specializing in tropical medicine and epidemiology. She is entering a second term on the Steering Committee.
The International Organizations College
The International Organizations College is formed by Dr Asma Saidouni, a veterinary epidemiologist and technical officer specializing in One Health at the World Health Organization, and Dr Chadia Wannous, a public health specialist and One Health global coordinator at the World Organisation for Animal Health.
Kick off meeting
The first meeting of the new PREZODE Steering Committee is taking place on December 4-5 in Paris. The meeting will offer a unique opportunity for previous and new members of the Committee to meet and work together.
