Wildlife Ecologist, Director of Research
Alexandre Caron is a French veterinarian and wildlife ecologist working for Cirad, currently joint-appointed at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi since mid-2024. After twenty years based in eastern and southern Africa — in Zimbabwe, Mozambique and now Kenya — his research focuses on the ecology of pathogen transmission at the wildlife/livestock/human interface, drawing on disease ecology, behavioural ecology, epidemiology and community ecology. Over the past ten years, he has increasingly applied sustainability sciences, including participatory and anticipatory approaches, to promote coexistence between people and nature in shared landscapes where protected areas and communal lands coexist. He contributes to the emerging field of social-ecological system health (SES Health), an extension of ecosystem health within the One Health framework.
